Google recently added official support for non-Latin and accented characters in Gmail. While this is obviously great for users of non-Latin languages (Chinese, Japanese, Hebrew, etc), it’s a plus for the rest of us in the English-speaking world as well. Why is that? By officially adding support for non-Latin characters, Google is now able to properly screen for “confusables” or “look-a-like” characters in Gmail. These are characters in other languages that, at a quick glance, appear to be from the English alphabet. Spammers and scammers use these often in a direct attempt to make it past spam filters.
